Jan. 20 (UPI) — Indiana quarterback Alberto Mendoza, the younger brother of starter Fernando Mendoza, entered the transfer portal, he confirmed Tuesday on Instagram.
Alberto Mendoza, who has three years of remaining eligibility, completed 18 of 24 passes for 286 yards, five touchdowns and an interception over nine appearances this season while serving as a second-string option behind his Heisman-winning brother. He ran for 190 yards and a score on 13 carries.
Alberto Mendoza also served as a backup for the Hoosiers in 2024, behind Kurtis Rourke, while his brother played at California.
Players from Indiana and Miami, who the Hoosiers beat Monday for their first national title, have until Saturday to enter their names into the transfer portal.
Alberto Mendoza’s planned departure comes after the Hoosiers signed former TCU starter Josh Hoover. Hoover, who signed with the Hoosiers earlier this month, threw for 9,629 yards, with 71 touchdowns and 33 interceptions over the last three seasons.
He made 36 appearances for the Horned Frogs over that span.
The Hoosiers will open their 2026 campaign against North Texas on Sept. 5 in Bloomington, Ind.
