Polls open in hard-fought Malaysian election

Kuala Lumpur (AFP) – Polls opened Wednesday for a hard-fought election in Malaysia, with scandal-hit Prime Minister Najib Razak facing a tough challenge from veteran ex-leader Mahathir Mohamad, 92.

People began casting their ballots at 8:00 am (0000 GMT) at voting centres across the country. Polls will close at 5:00 pm and results should be known late Wednesday.
