Dec. 8 (UPI) — Patrick Mahomes threw three interceptions as the Houston Texans’ defense smothered his top weapons for a 20-10 triumph in Kansas City, Mo.

Linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair, cornerback Kamari Lassiter and safety Jalen Pitre each logged interceptions in the victory at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium. The Chiefs held a 274-268 advantage in total yards, but converted just four times on third down and were doomed by their trio of turnovers.

“We had a relentless game and everybody showed up precise,” Texas pass rusher Will Anderson Jr., said on the NBC broadcast. “Everybody was detailed. We had great preparation all week, offense and defense, and we just played complementary football.”

The Chiefs lost for the fourth time in five games to drop to 6-7. With their sixth loss, their playoff probability dropped from 35% to 15%.

“You are getting late in the season and you aren’t getting these opportunities back,” Mahomes told reporters. “That’s a good football team, but we had chances and we didn’t execute at the right time to win it.”

Kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn made a 35-yard field goal with 4:18 remaining in the first quarter for the first points of the night. Quarterback C.J. Stroud threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to running back Woody Marks at 9:24 in the second quarter to help the Texans increase their lead to 10-0.

Pitre intercepted Mahomes’ first pass of the next drive, but the Texans failed to convert that turnover into points. Kicker Harrison Butker went on to miss a 43-yard field goal attempt a minute before halftime, leaving the Chiefs with a 10-point deficit at the break.

The Chiefs finally found the end zone when Kareem Hunt ran for a 2-yard score about five minutes into the second half. Butker connected on a 36-yard field goal about eight minutes later to tie the game, but the Chiefs didn’t score again.

The Chiefs defense forced a three-and-out on the next Texans possession, but Lassiter intercepted Mahomes on the third play of the resulting drive.

Mahomes and the Chiefs went on to attempt a fourth-down conversion with about 10 minutes remaining. Wide receiver Rashee Rice failed to haul in a pass from Mahomes on that play, giving the Texans the ball deep in Chiefs territory.

Running back Dare Ogunbowale ran for a 5-yard score with 6:56 remaining to give the Texans a 17-10 advantage. The Chiefs failed to convert on fourth down once again to end their next drive. Mahomes threw his third interception of the night when tight end Travis Kelce failed to haul in a catch and deflected the ball to Al-Shaair with about 3:40 remaining.
