Nov. 25 (UPI) — Sen. Jim Justice and his wife, Cathy Justice, agreed to pay $5 million in unpaid federal income taxes Tuesday, one day after the Internal Revenue Service filed a lawsuit in seeking to collect on the 2009 bill.

The $5.16 million settlement includes federal income taxes, penalties and interest, Bloomberg Law reported.

Shortly after the IRS filed the lawsuit in a West Virginia federal court, a joint motion for court approval of a settlement was filed in which the Justices agreed to pay the full amount owed. The judge must rule on the settlement before it can be finalized, NBC News reported.

The Republican from West Virginia was the heir to the coal company Bluestone. The Justice family owns Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va., and other companies run by his children.

In October, the IRS filed liens of more than $8 million against the couple. And in 2024, a judge ordered the family to sell six of their companies to settle debts.

Justice won the U.S. Senate seat previously held by Democrat-turned-Independent Sen. Joe Manchin, who decided not to run for re-election in 2024. Justice’s first term went into effect in January.
