April 29 (UPI) — Arkansas Derby runner-up Silent Tactic was scratched from Saturday’s Kentucky Derby with a foot bruise, moving Great White into the 20-horse field.
Great White, a Volatile colt, takes over the outside, No. 20, gate and everyone else slides in one spot up to the vacated No. 13.
Great White made his first three starts on the Turfway Park all-weather course, winning the first, finishing fifth in the Leonatus Stakes, then winning the John Battaglia Memorial. He skipped Turfway’s final Kentucky Derby prep, the Jeff Ruby Steaks, in favor of Keeneland’s Grade I Blue Grass, where he again finished fifth, beaten 22 1/4 lengths.
The colt is trained by John Ennis, and Alex Achard was named as the rider. He was pegged at 50-1 on the morning line as the first of four “also eligible” entries.
Silent Tactic, trained by Mark Casse, won the Grade II Southwest at Oaklawn Park, and then was second in both the Grade II Rebel and the Grade I Arkansas Derby.
