Two weeks ago, Breitbart Sports reported on the uphill fight the New Jersey Devils faced to make the playoffs after their right wing Tom Kostopoulos was knocked out against the Islanders. On, Sunday the New York Rangers knocked the Devils out as a team – eliminating them from the playoffs for only the second time in six years.
It took the Rangers’ Ryan Callahan only 34 seconds to score, and by the time he scored again it was clear Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist was not going to let the Devils off the mat. He made 26 saves as the Rangers eliminated the New Jersey Devils from the Eastern Conference playoff race with a 4-1 victory.
Callahan provided the lead 34 seconds in, Derek Stepan added a goal in the first period, and Taylor Pyatt snapped a long drought in the second for the eight-place Rangers, who are inching closer to a playoff berth.
The loss makes the Winnipeg Jets, who could improve from 49 to 55 points if they win their final three games, the only team that could catch the Rangers (52 points), Islanders (53 points) or Ottawa Senators (52 points) for one of the last three playoff spots in the Eastern Conference.
