The blue wig-wearing Lions fan who found himself on the receiving end of a punch from Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf has revealed what he said to the star wideout moments before the attack.
Towards the end of the first half, as the Lions were driving into Pittsburgh territory. Metcalf got into a spat with a fan wearing a Honolulu Blue wig. Metcalf pulled the fan toward him and threw a punch.
The fan, quoted by the Detroit Free Press, said he only called Metcalf by name.
“What, my full name isn’t is DeKaylin Zecharius Metcalf,” said Lions fan Ryan Kennedy. “He doesn’t like his government name. I called him that, and then he grabbed me and ripped my shirt. I’m a little shocked, like everyone’s talking to me. I’m a little rattled, but I just want the Lions to win, baby.”
Alas, the Lions did not win. The Steelers defeated Detroit 29-24 in a game that wasn’t short on drama, on or off the field.
ESPN NFL reporter Adam Schefter reported that the league will indeed open an investigation into the incident, one that will undoubtedly leave Metcalf lighter in the wallet.
Perhaps of more concern to Metcalf and his team is that the NFL’s forthcoming discipline could result in a suspension at a time when Pittsburgh is looking to preserve its spot at the top of the AFC North and gear up for what they hope will be a deep playoff run.
