State authorities abandoned a trailer with 157 bodies in the coastal state of Jalisco. The trailer was used as a stopgap after morgues overfilled due to regional cartel violence.
The trailer was abandoned over the weekend near Tlajomuclo de Zuniga. The smell of decay caused outrage among residents of the Paseo Del Valle neighborhood, El Financiero reported.
The tractor-trailer contained the remains of 157 unidentified victims of cartel violence in Jalisco. The truck sat in the neighborhood for longer than 12 hours until state authorities moved it to Guadalajara near the offices of the State Attorney General.
The use of the tractor-trailer comes after cartel violence in Jalisco escalated with more than 1,500 murders since January 2018. According to El Financiero, the figure already surpassed the 2017 murder statistics and is now the bloodiest year on record.
The dominant cartel in Jalisco goes by the name Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generacion, a criminal organization that has earned a reputation for bloodshed. The CJNG is responsible for the escalating violence throughout Mexico as the group seeks new territory. The CJNG is a security concern for authorities due to their use of improvised explosive devices and recruitment of terrorists from Colombia’s FARC.
