EXCLUSIVE: Senate Minority Leader Wants Six-Month Continuing Resolution, New President

Today, Breitbart News spoke with Senator Minority Leader Mitch McConnell’s office about the upcoming continuing resolution to fund government services. “Leader McConnell will support the longest continuing resolution the Republican-led House can pass and is optimistic we’ll have one for at least six months soon. Beyond that, he hopes to have a Republican President in January and very much looks forward to working with him to cut Washington spending,” said a spokesperson for McConnell.

McConnell’s position is supported by Republicans across the political spectrum. Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC), as well as Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) back a proposal to negotiate a continuing government funding resolution that will take Congress past the election. DeMint has expressed the notion that he wants to avoid Democrats using the continuing resolution to leverage Congress into accepting liberal budget proposals, including additional spending and tax increases.

“The only way to protect the taxpayers from this premeditated mugging,” said DeMint, “is for the House to pass, before the August recess, a fiscally responsible continuing resolution to extend federal operations well into the new year. Then, Senate Republicans can force a vote on the CR, forcing Democrats to explain – to the American people – why they are seeking a government shutdown crisis. Taking the threat of a government shutdown off the table will allow a serious debate about tax and spending policy before the elections.”
