DNC War on Women: No Child Care at Convention

The National Organization for Women chapters in Southern California and feminist Gloria Steinem are coming to the defense of……mothers? Yes it’s true!

The DNC is holding their convention in Charlotte, NC and 2012 Democratic National Convention delegate Susie Shannon wanted to go with her 4 year old daughter. It turns out, though, the convention organizers won’t provide child care or allow children on the convention floor.

“Moms with young children six years of age and under who cannot be left at home, some of whom are breastfeeding, are relegated to second-class status within the Democratic Convention,” she explained in a statement, “unable to participate as a delegate due to antiquated policies and inadequate accommodations that were apparently in place before women’s suffrage.”

NOW and Ms. Steinem are accusing the DNC of discriminating against mothers.

“Women are the key to a Democratic victory, and sometimes, children are the key to women,” said Ms. Steinem. “It’s both right and smart for the Democratic Convention to behave as if children exist.”

NOW Hollywood President Lindsey Hovath cannot believe the DNC would force the children and babies to be credentialed like their mothers.

“The DNC requires children and babies to have a credential to enter the convention, and then denies these credential requests from moms,” said Ms. Hovath. “The DNC credentialing process is being used as a tool to prevent mothers from participating at the convention and is nothing short of discriminatory.”

Convetion spokeswoman Joanne Peters did say mothers can find childcare providers in the convention’s directory and they will provide areas for nursing mothers.

“Democratic conventions have historically required credentials for all individuals to access the convention hall to ensure the safety and security of all attending,” she said.

But that isn’t good enough for Ms. Shannon.

“The Democratic Party shouldn’t put you in a position where you have to choose between your child and participating in a political convention,” she said.

War on women? The Democrats are supposed to be the party for women, the ones who fight for the rights of women! But where were NOW and Ms. Steinem when Ann Romney was attacked for being a stay at home mother? Where were they when Sarah Palin was accused of not being Trig’s real mother? Will they do the same thing if the RNC doesn’t provide childcare for conservative mothers?

While it’s great these women are coming to the defense of women and mothers, they once again prove they only care when it’s a Democrat woman being attacked.
