President Barack Obama’s approval and favorability ratings dropped to their lowest levels in more than a year, according to a new McClatchy-Marist poll.
The poll found 48% of Americans disapprove of Obama’s job performance, while only 45% approve. In addition, Americans are liking Obama–whose personal popularity ratings have outpaced his approval ratings–even less. The poll found 48% of voters viewed Obama favorably and 48% viewed him negatively. These were the lowest levels in the Marist poll since November of 2011.
Much of Obama’s poor polling four months after he won reelection is due to the economy.
According to the poll, “just 34 percent of voters think the country’s heading in the right direction, while 62 percent think it’s headed the wrong way.” In addition, 62% of Americans still believe the country is in a recession, only 22% think the economic climate will improve for them personally this year, and 36% believe their economic situation will get even worse under Obama.
“You remove the electoral context and post-election celebration, and some of the numbers are returning to the dissatisfaction people had,” said Lee Miringoff, the director of poll. “Any glow from his re-election is starting to fade.”
The poll of 1,233 adults was conducted March 4-7, and the margin of error is +/- 2.8 percentage points.
