Hatch: No Guarantee Future Congresses Will Fund Immigration Bill

Orrin Hatch (R-UT), one of fifteen Republicans who voted to end debate on the Senate’s immigration bill on Monday, told Breitbart News before the vote that the bill cannot guarantee the bill’s $40 billion border security mandates would be funded by future Congresses.

“Well, you can’t,” Hatch said when asked if one could guarantee future Congresses will appropriate funds for the security measures. “This will be a landmark bill. There’s no question about it,” he explained. “Everybody knows that if they don’t vote to keep the bill going, if it passes, they’re going to be responsible for the mess we have, so I expect it to pass.”

Chris Crane, President of the National ICE Council, released a statement following the vote describing his displeasure with the bill’s lack of interior enforcement measures:

I am deeply disappointed that Senator Corker put out a press release Sunday night claiming he and Senator Hoeven provided tough interior enforcement measures in the Amendment they offered Friday night.  Senator Corker already admitted this weekend in an interview with Politico that the Corker-Hoeven Amendment does not provide for interior enforcement – and it most certainly does not.  Far from tough interior enforcement measures, this bill, now combined with Corker-Hoeven into a single 1,200 page bill, caters to special interest groups and in doing so undermines interior enforcement, law enforcement officers, public safety and the security of the nation.  It’s time for supporters of this legislation to start accurately describing it publicly.

Arizona Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio criticized lawmakers who claimed the immigration bill provided sufficient border security.

“[Undocumented immigrants] are very, very innovative. You’ll never secure the border,” Arpaio said on Fox News on Monday. “To say you’re not going to enforce the illegal immigration laws in the interior and blame it on the border, that’s just a copout.”
