Falling Deaths Outnumber ‘School Shooting’ Deaths by Tens of Thousands

As Bloomberg-funded Everytown for Gun Safety seizes the anniversary of the Sandy Hook attack as a chance to push more gun control, it is important to note that falling deaths outnumber “school shooting” deaths by tens of thousands each year.

Again, by tens of thousands–not simply thousands.

According to Everytown’s most recent numbers, there were 45 fatalities from “school shootings” between the December 2012 Sandy Hook attack and December 9, 2014. Forty-five is probably high due to Everytown’s method of compiling such statistics, but it will be used to denote the number of “school shooting” deaths over a two-year period.

And if we divide the two-year total in half, we get a figure of 22.5 “school shooting” deaths for each of those two years.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported “27,483 unintentional fall deaths” in 2011 alone. That is 27,460.5 more deaths each year via unintentional falls than “school shootings,” yet Everytown is pulling out all stops to make America safer by pushing more gun control.

Moreover, the CDC reported “26,009” unintentional falling deaths in 2010. When added to the CDC figures for 2011, a total of 53,492 people were killed over a two-year period due to such falls.

The data speaks for itself: 45 “school shooting” deaths over a two-year period vs. 53,492 unintentional falling deaths over a two-year period.

In just two years, unintentional falls killed nearly as many Americans as were lost in the entire Vietnam War.
