Oscar Snubs Oprah
The Motion Picture Academy announced its 2013 Oscar nominations Thursday. Notable snubs included Robert Redford, Emma Thompson, and Tom Hanks. The most surprising snub, though, was directed at Oprah Winfrey, who once upon a time seemed like a sure thing for her work in "Lee Daniels' The Butler."
Like the movie, Winfrey's performance was widely praised when the film was released back in August. The film was a hit and so was Winfrey's media blitz, at least until her bizarre tale of being the victim of racism at a luxury Swiss boutique blew up in her face.
What started out as the perfect racially-themed anecdote for a lapdog media turned into a public relations disaster when the shop girl accused of racism branded Oprah a liar. Oprah's only response was back off her claim.
The media did its best to play down Oprah's humiliation, but everyone knew what had happened, including Oscar voters.
