Schieffer: House Will Reject Immigration Bill Because Mostly Whites Live In GOP Districts
Bob Schieffer knows why the Senate's Immigration bill will die in the House of Representatives and it's not because of the rule of law, or the pork, or the lack of real border security or accountability. No, according to the sage voice of reason at CBS News, it's because Republicans only care about white voters:
As party leaders, you see the changing demographics the country is undergoing. You know the Hispanic population is growing. You watched as Mitt Romney did quite well among Old White Guys while President Obama ran away with the African American vote, the Hispanic vote, and the Asian vote.
But here's some news you can use: National Journal reports that 70 percent of the House districts represented by Republicans have Hispanic populations of 10 percent or less. That means voting against immigration reform is one of the easiest votes that Republicans in those districts can take. Voting for it increases the possibility they'll get a Republican primary opponent next time.
It takes either supreme laziness or a political agenda to write-off opposition to the Gang of Eight's gargantuan immigration bill to racial politics. Sen. Rand Paul (R-TN) is extremely sympathetic to the economic realities behind much of the influx of illegal immigrants, but he opposes the bill because it swings too much power to the Executive Branch. Many other Republicans have expressed concern over the pork that has been injected into the bill to pay off Senators for their support.
But no, according to Schieffer, it all boils down to race. If this is the case, would Schieffer agree that those who support the bill are doing it solely for the purpose of pandering to the Hispanic vote? Don't hold your breath.
