In the aftermath of Hong Kong’s decision to deny the United States’ extradition request for NSA leaker Edward Snowden, White House press secretary Jay Carney responded angrily. “We are just not buying that this was a technical decision by a Hong Kong immigration official,” Carney said on Monday morning.
Hong Kong’s letter to the United States’ Department of Justice said that the request for extradition did not fulfill legal requirements, and questioned the United States’ spying on Hong Kong citizens. The United States has also asked Russia to send Snowden back to the United States. “We expect the Russian government to look at all options available to expel Mr. Snowden back to the US to face justice for the crimes with which he is charged,” said National Security Council spokesperson Caitlin Hayden on Monday.
State Department spokesperson Jen Psaki added, “Persons wanted on felony charges, such as Mr. Snowden, should not be allowed to proceed in any further international travel, other than is necessary to return him to the United States.”
