They’ve agreed on the goal posts, they’re evenly-matched teams and there is still everything to play for in the Scottish referendum. But the mid-referendum football penalty shoot-out for Motor Neurone Disease has already been narrowly won by the No campaign: Better Together.
The epic contest for the heart and soul of Scotland was led by Blair Jenkin’s from Yes Scotland, whilst Scottish Conservative Leader Ruth Davidson led Better Together. The shoot-out took place at Spartans FC’s Ainslie Park ground in Edinburgh.
Whilst Yes Scotland is three points behind in the polls, they were just one goal behind in the match: losing 5-4. In a further good omen for Better Together the real winner of the day was the charity they raised money for: Gordon’s Fight Back (yes, really).
It comes just a day after Tory MP Andrew Rosindell told Breitbart London that the widely ridiculed former British Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, was damaging the campaign by getting involved with it. No doubt he will want any referendum win to be seen as Gordon’s Fight Back: although this is fairly unlikely.
It was Yes team leader Blair Jenkins who missed the crucial goal, losing the game. He was up against goal-keeper John Park, who is assistant general secretary of trade union Community. The Shadow Foreign Secretary, Douglas Alexander also turned out for Better Together.
More than £60,000 was raised for Gordon’s Fight Back, which is actually a fundraising website for Motor Neurone Disease set-up by Better Together’s director of research, Gordon Aikman. He was diagnosed with the disease earlier this year.
Speaking to the Scottish Herald, Mr Aikman said: “I want to thank both Better Together and Yes Scotland for coming together and taking part in the shoot-out. Spartans Community Football Academy have also been amazing in helping with hosting the event.” Donations to the campaign can be made by texting MNDS85 £5 to 70070.
