Ex-Auburn Tiger Indicted in Point-Shaving Scandal

U.S. Attorney George Beck announced on Tuesday that a grand jury indicted former Auburn point guard Varez Ward on charges of alleged point shaving. The alleged game-fixer was arrested Monday on counts of bribery and conspiracy stemming from allegedly trying to fix the point spread for Auburn’s game against Arkansas on Jan. 25, 2012.

Auburn was a 9.5-point underdog in the game. Ward did not start the contest, but came off the bench and fell to the floor with an injury barely 20 seconds later. Auburn lost 56-53, but still managed to cover the spread.

Beck, the US Attorney for the Middle District of Alabama, unsealed the indictment Tuesday. The indictment does not list any co-conspirators but Beck alleges Ward tried to involve his Tiger teammates with pay teammates willing to participate in point-shaving.
