Coach K Not a Fan of Special Notre Dame-ACC Relationship
Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski is a traditional kind of guy, and, therefore, does not appreciate many of the changes that have come into college athletics, including the recent trend toward conference realignment.
Specifically, the legendary coach and leadership expert has taken issue with Notre Dame and their special relationship with the ACC that allows them to be semi-members in football and full-fledged members in every other sport.
"I think you can't do something for one that you're not willing to do
for all in these type of situations," Krzyzewski said. "I would never
have accepted personally them coming in and not being totally in. Why
don't Duke and North Carolina do something different in basketball? I
mean it's not right. I'm happy that they're part of it I'm just not
happy the way that they're apart of it. They add value but, just
being old-fashioned, (if) we're playing cards, we all get five cards.
That's why they were never a member of the Big Ten."
Mike Brey, the coach at Notre Dame, tried to laugh off his former mentor's comments. "Mike should just hug us and welcome us," Brey said. "Now let's go make it the best league in the country."
Brey also pointed out that schools such as Duke and North Carolina do not have a realistic perspective of the college basketball landscape given their elite status. He went on to urge the traditional coach to be more accepting of the "different world" we are living in.
