Grandfather Wins $200K on 15-Year-Old Soccer Bet After Grandson Debuts in Wales
Paul Edwards placed a £50 bet that his 18-month grandson Harry Wilson would be the youngest player for Wales football team. On Tuesday, he won £125,000 when 16-year-old Wilson debuted, which is just over $200,000.
Harry appeared in the 87th minute of the game and at 16 years and 207 days he shattered Gareth Bale's record by 108 days. When Paul placed the bet the odds were 2,500/1 and now Edwards can retire a year earlier than planned.
"I was shattered because I had to wait for 85, 86 minutes before he came on and I was panicking because they'd already substituted twice, so I thought he wasn't going to make it," he said.
"But when he came on I had another glass of wine. (I was) a proud granddad first for sure.
"I told my wife at half-time that my pulse was 106 - I didn't know whether that was good or bad."
Apparently Harry showed excellent football skills before he could walk. Paul said he chased the ball around the house when he was 18-months-old. His wife Dorothy is very happy he can retire. Paul is an electrical contractor and spends the majority of the year away from home.
"She is over the moon. I retired immediately. I told my manager yesterday that if Harry plays I wouldn't be coming back," said Mr Edwards.
"I've retired one year early. I have come home now and will not be going back. Not bad for a daft bet."
