Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Washington seek to host the 2024 Summer Olympics. But the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) hasn’t yet decided whether it will even advance a bid from an American city.
The information comes from the Associated Press, which spoke to an anonymous source briefed on the deliberations. The USOC has stumbled badly in its last two attempts to secure the Games for an American city. Should the USOC opt to push an American city, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) would give a thumbs up or down to the proposal in 2017
The United States has played host to a record eight Olympiads, four in winter and four in summer. Los Angeles, like Lake Placid, boasts the distinction of hosting multiple Games. St. Louis, Squaw Valley, Atlanta, and Salt Lake City have hosted the other Olympics held in the United States.
New York’s bid for 2012, and Chicago’s bid for 2016, didn’t even receive silver or bronze from the IOC. Both finished fourth in the process. The defeats give the USOC pause in preparing a pricey bid for 2024.
Rio hosts the 2016 sports spectacle and Tokyo returns after a 56-year break to stage the summer games in 2020.
