American Woman Allegedly Raped in Brazil After Australia-Chile Game
An American woman was allegedly raped in Brazil on Friday after the Australia and Chile game. Brazilian officials told the US they are investigating the crime.
The woman, 24, was accompanied by U.S. embassy officials to a hospital in the state [Mato Grosso] capital of Cuiaba, a statement from the Mato Grosso state civil police said on Saturday, the third day of the month-long tournament.
The woman and her boyfriend were staying in the home of someone they met during Friday's World Cup celebrations and she woke up screaming with a man on top of her, the statement said.
Several people were interviewed about the incident, including the owner of the home, but no one has been arrested, police said.
A spokeswoman at the US embassy told Reuters that the embassy knew about incident, but could not comment because of privacy laws.
There are three more matches in Cuiaba: Russia vs. South Korea, Nigeria vs. Bosnia, and Japan vs. Colombia. Due to threats of protests and violent fans from visiting fans Brazil added more security to the tournament.
