The president explained in too many communities there is a "gulf of mistrust" between law enforcement and the residents.
He then pointed to his "My Brothers Keeper" initiative which mentors young black men as a possible solution.
Obama also announced that Attorney General Eric Holder will go to Ferguson on Wednesday to meet with investigators and the FBI and "assess the situation."
