On February 24, Moms Demand Action founder Shannon Watts wrote an op-ed suggesting that campus carry could actually increase sexual assaults on campuses around country.
The op-ed was Published by MSNBC.
In it, Watts indicated that campus carry bills are moving through legislatures in 15 states and that “it would be a big win for the NRA and gun manufacturers to force guns onto campus.”
She emphasizes the danger she believes campus carry could pose to women but cites no statistics from current campus carry states to back up her claim. Rather, she points to recent testimony on proposed campus carry legislation where some female students “worried guns would be used to perpetrate sexual assault.”
To be fair, Watts did mention a very prominent woman who supports campus carry—Nevada Assemblywoman Michele Fiore—but did so only to try and discredit Fiore as an NRA-backed politician who is “exploiting the national conversation around campus sexual assault.”
In other words—it is okay to mention sexual assault if you are a gun control proponent criticizing campus carry, but it is not acceptable to mention it if you believe allowing women to arm themselves for protection is a sound preventative measure against predators and criminals.
