On April 14, Oregon Senate Democrats passed expanded background checks based on a 2012 shooting at Clackamas Town Center in the Portland suburbs. The problem with this is that the Clackamas gunman stole his gun—so no amount of gun control would have stopped him—and his attack was stopped by a concealed carry permit holder who was armed in the mall.
According to Oregon Live, the background check push is in response to out-of-state issues like the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting and the in-state shooting at Clackamas Town Center. Ironically, the shooters in both these instances stole their guns so no amount of gun control—including expanded background checks—would have stopped them.
At Sandy Hook, Adam Lanza stole his guns, and at Clackamas Town Center, Fox 12 reports that shooter Jacob Roberts also stole his AR-15 and died after being confronted by a concealed carry permit holder who aimed his gun at Roberts but never fired a shot.
Roberts saw the gun aimed at him then used to the AR-15 to take his own life.
Yet Oregon Democrats are using Clackamas as justification for the passage of more background checks?
When Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) pushed expanded background checks in the wake of Sandy Hook, he admitted that the background checks would not have stopped Adam Lanza. The same is true of Jacob Roberts, and Oregonians who support background checks under the guise that they will end Clackamas-like attacks are sorely deceived.
