Washington D.C. Among the Nation’s Wealthiest Zip Codes

Washington D.C. figures prominently in a newly-compiled list of the country’s richest zip codes, a report revealed Friday.

The list, compiled by using IRS data, finds that many of the zip codes in and around the Washington D.C. corridor are filled with some of the nation’s wealthiest residents.

“In the Washington, D.C. area,” The Washington Post reports, “[zip code] 20510, which includes the Senate office buildings, ranks as the wealthiest zip code in the District, with an average income of $191,818. In Maryland, the wealthiest zip code is 21056, Gibson Island, with an average income of $450,012. In Virginia it’s Roanoke (24005), with an average income of $394,400.”

This is unsurprising in light of a report earlier this week that home prices in Washington D.C. have skyrocketed so high that lower- and middle-income families are being priced out of the area.

This coincides with statistics that show that some of the nation’s richest cities are in and around the District of Columbia, and some of the richest counties surround the beltway.

In January, the Post reported that “D.C. has the third-highest percentage of households earning at least $150,000 a year among cities with at least 500,000 people.”

While some of the top earners in America live in and around D.C., three of the top five zip codes are around New York City, while the third is Miami, Florida, and the fifth is Wilmington, Delaware.

But it is a clear fact that one must be fairly wealthy to live in or near the nation’s capital.
