On May 7, former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords briefly spoke to Delaware state senators to push gun control for “mothers” and “families” via Senate Bill 83.

According to WMDT, SB 83 will help “protect Delaware domestic violence victims.”

Delaware Online reports the bill requires that “firearms … be immediately relinquished” upon issuance of a protective order, giving subjects of the order 24 hours to comply. And state attorney General Matt Denn believes the 24-hour time frame is a sufficient recognition and protects “the due process rights of Delawareans facing protective orders.”

The NRA warns that due process is by no means protected in SB 83 and gun owners are at risk of losing Second Amendment rights via the issuance of “emergency protective orders.”

Giffords said, “Criminals with guns, abusers with guns, stalkers with guns, that makes gun violence a women’s issue. For mothers, for families, for me and you. Please join your voice with mine.”

She added, “We stand for common sense. We stand for responsibility. We can change our laws. We can win elections. Please join your voice with mine.”

This comes just days after Giffords praised the Oregon House for supporting legislation requiring Oregonians to pass the same background check her attacker–Jared Loughner–passed to acquire his gun. And it is just over a month since she stood with U.S. Representative Mike Thompson (D-CA-5th) in an attempt to revive the expanded background legislation that failed in April 2013.

SB 83 is sponsored by state Senator Margaret Rose Henry (D-Wilmington).
