A new Morning Consult poll shows real estate mogul Donald Trump remains on top as the GOP frontrunner following Tuesday’s debate. Trump came in with 36 percent, down two percentage points since before the debate.
Dr. Ben Carson came in second with 12 percent, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) ranked third with 11 percent and Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) held fourth place at nine percent.
Trump’s support from men, 42 percent, remained the same before and after the debate, but his support among women dropped from 34 to 29 percent.
Heading into the debate, roughly four in ten respondents said that national security was a top concern. After the debate, those that worried about national security dropped slightly, but national security still trumped economic issues as a top concern.
The poll noted that one in six Republicans surveyed said they would vote for Democrat frontrunner Hillary Clinton instead of Donald Trump in a general election.
The Morning Consult poll questioned 1,340 registered Republican and GOP leaning voters before the debate. The poll surveyed 861 voters three days after the fifth GOP primary debate earlier this week. The margin error was plus or minus three percentage points.
The poll was conducted through phone calls, interactive voice response, and online.
