Bernie Sanders: Hillary Clinton’s Proposals Will Eliminate Gun Makers in America

During the March 6 Democrat Debate, Bernie Sanders warned that Hillary Clinton’s proposals regarding gun manufacturers’ liability would literally eliminate gun makers in America.

At the heart of Clinton’s proposals is the reversal of the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA)–an act which shields gun makers from frivolous lawsuits brought by those who want to hold gun makers liable for the illegal use of guns that are legally made and sold. Clinton is campaigning on removing the protections afforded by the PLCAA so that gun makers and gun stores will be a viable target for lawsuits by crime victims.

Sanders rejected Clinton’s proposals during the debate, warning that gun manufacturers will simply disappear if the framework for Clinton’s lawsuit scenario is put in place. According to The Hill, Sanders made clear that he does not support opening gun manufacturers up to be sued in situations where their products are legally sold, then used illegally after the fact.

He said:

If that is the point, I have to tell you I disagree. I disagree because you hold people — in terms of this liability thing, where you hold manufacturers’ liable is if they understand that they’re selling guns into an area that — it’s getting into the hands of criminals, of course, they should be held liable.

But if they are selling a product to a person who buys it legally, what you’re really talking about is ending gun manufacturing in America. I don’t agree with that.

The NRA responded to Sanders’ comments by tweeting support for the way he exposed the reality of Clinton’s proposals. If Clinton were successful, gun makers would have to close their doors.
