President Donald Trump called Obamacare a “dead carcass,” urging members of Congress to pass the bill drafted by the Senate.
“Health care is a very, very tough thing to get,” Trump acknowledged in an interview on Fox and Friends airing Sunday morning. “But I think we’re going to get it. We don’t have too much of a choice because the alternative is the dead carcass of Obamacare.”
Trump said it was difficult to weigh competing forces while drafting the bill, but that the bill revealed by the Senate this week was a good start. He recalled the tangled legislative process under Obamacare, pointing to the “Cornhusker kickback” as proof that it took a lot of work for Democrats to get enough votes to pass the Affordable Care Act.
Five Republican senators are opposed to the new health care bill as written, demanding changes to the legislation before they can support it: Sen. Dean Heller (R-NV) and conservative Senators Rand Paul, Ron Johnson, Mike Lee, and Ted Cruz.
Trump said that each of the lawmakers would have a chance to negotiate a better deal.
“I don’t think we’re that far off… I think we’re going to get there,” he said.
On Twitter this weekend, Trump urged the dissenting Republican senators to get behind the bill.
“I cannot imagine that these very fine Republican Senators would allow the American people to suffer a broken ObamaCare any longer!” he wrote.
