A new bill before the California legislature would prohibit government-funded travel to states that have passed religious freedom laws that the legislature decides are unfair to the LGBT community.
Assemblyman Evan Low (D-Campbell), introduced AB 1887, which states it would “prohibit state-funded or state-sponsored travel to any state with a law in effect that sanctions or requires discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression, subject to specified exceptions.”
Low told the Sacramento Bee, “No one wants to send employees into an environment where they would be uncomfortable,” adding that he was prompted to introduce the bill after Indiana passed the Religious freedom Restoration Act one year ago.
Low stated on his website, “I’m proud to be a voice for the LGBT community throughout the state and in the country. The Golden State has always been a leader in protecting civil rights and preventing discrimination. Our zero-tolerance policy says there is no room for discrimination of any kind in California, and will certainly not be tolerated beyond our borders.”
