A drunk driver who killed a young couple on their way to a hospital to give birth — and whose baby died the next day — was indicted Wednesday for fleeing the scene, a prosecutor said.
Julio Acevedo was driving a BMW when he slammed into a livery cab taking Nathan Glauber and his wife Raizi, who was seven months pregnant, to the hospital just after midnight on March 3.
The Glaubers, who were 21, were both killed. Doctors performed an emergency Cesarian section on Raizi Glauber to save her unborn son’s life, but he died the next day.
“Based on Acevedo’s prior criminal record, he faces a maximum sentence of 25 years-to-life in prison,” said Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hyman.
“According to the indictment, Acevedo fled the scene of the accident, drove to Pennsylvania and surrendered to NYPD officers four days after the incident,” Hyman said in a statement.
The drama aroused intense emotion among the couple’s Jewish Orthodox community Brooklyn, and several hundred people attended their funeral.
