Liberal Democrat party president Tim Farron admitted his party was “in a critical state” and faced the genuine possibility of oblivion if its MPs became complacent.
He said Thursday that “99 percent” of the public was not interested in sexual harassment claims against former party CEO Lord Chris Rennard, but that the party had botched its response.
“The party is in a critical state,” he said in an interview with the House Magazine.
“We may well be cockroach-ish, but we shouldn’t take that for granted. One day someone will stand on us if we are not careful. We shouldn’t assume our survival is guaranteed,” he added.
He stood by earlier comments in which he said the party had “screwed up” during the fall-out of the Rennard affair.
