Queen Elizabeth II’s 91-year-old husband Prince Philip on Monday pulled out of a joint engagement with the monarch after falling ill, Buckingham Palace said.
He was due at a gala reception for the Royal National Institute of Blind People at St James’s Palace on the eve of a service to mark the 60th anniversary of the queen’s coronation.
“The duke is unwell, but he will be at the service tomorrow,” said the spokeswoman, without revealing details of the illness.
Philip was treated twice last year for a bladder infection that forced him to miss the last of the queen’s huge diamond jubilee celebrations.
He also suffered a blocked coronary artery the previous Christmas that required a surgical procedure to insert a stent.
The prince, whose official title is the Duke of Edinburgh, is the longest-serving royal consort in British history and has been the queen’s constant companion throughout her reign.
