New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced Friday an end to gasoline rationing imposed two weeks ago to reduce lines at filling stations in the wake of superstorm Sandy.
“More than 85 percent of gas stations in the city are now operational and the available supply of gasoline and diesel fuel is only expected to continue to increase,” the mayor’s office said in a statement.
The lifting of the emergency measure was to take effect early Saturday. The system, in which drivers with even-number license plates could fill up on even dates and odd-numbered ones on odd dates, was ordered on November 9.
Flooding from Sandy knocked out crucial fuel infrastructure, initially leading to severe fuel shortages in the New York City area and massive lines at the few functioning stations.
