President Barack Obama will meet Republican speaker John Boehner Thursday in a new effort to break their deadlock in the “fiscal cliff” tax and austerity crisis, a White House official said.
The rivals will meet at the White House at 5 pm (2200 GMT), the official said on condition of anonymity.
Boehner earlier complained that Obama was not serious about cutting spending while White House officials are calling on Republicans to agree to the president’s call to raise taxes on the wealthiest Americans.
