Democrats pick up Indiana Senate seat

President Barack Obama’s Democratic Party on Tuesday picked up a Senate seat in Indiana, where Joe Donnelly defeated the controversial conservative Richard Mourdock, television networks projected.

The seat had initially been seen as safe for the Republicans as Obama lost Indiana. But Tea Party member Mourdock defeated long-serving Republican Richard Lugar and came under fire after he defended his staunch anti-abortion views by calling pregnancy that results from rape a “gift from God.”
