Notorious thieves could be fitted with GPS tags in order to allow authorities to track them via satellite under plans expected to be announced by the government later Monday.
The scheme’s proponents hope it will prevent repeat offenders from entering town centres and other areas where they are though more likely to commit crime.
Justice Secretary Chris Grayling and Prisons Minister Jeremy Wright are due to outline the proposals at a conference on the rehabilitation of offenders.
At the moment, tagging only allows officials to observe whether the offender is at their address during their period of curfew.
