Call for 'Harlem Shake' librarian to be reinstated

Students at Oxford University’s St Hilda’s College are demanding that officials reverse their decision to sack a librarian after about 30 undergraduates filmed themselves doing the Harlem Shake.

Footage of students performing the Internet dance craze in the college’s library has been viewed more than 5,000 views on YouTube — but also saw a librarian sacked.

The college’s Junior Common Room (JCR) on Tuesday passed a motion calling for the librarian to be reinstated.

JCR president Esther Gosling insisted that the librarian “couldn’t have stopped” the filming of the video, which went online last month.

“We don’t want to undermine the college authorities or decisions they make, but in this case we think their reaction is excessive and the dismissal is unfair,” she said.

Gosling added that officials had informed her they would not comment on individual staff matters.
