Texas Monthly: Powers Misled Admissions Investigation

AUSTIN, Texas–In an article published by Texas Monthly today profiling embattled UT Regent Wallace Hall, who uncovered evidence of legislative clout abuse in admissions and is at the center of an impeach inquiry for his work, it was revealed that resigning UT President Bill Powers reportedly “misled” investigators.

It was this action that caused Chancellor Francisco Cigarroa to demand Powers’ resignation.

Breitbart Texas was the first news organization to report on Cigarroa’s ultimatum that Powers resign or be fired, and the first to report on the existence of a new whistleblower.

Texas Monthly gives a deeper explanation of what that whistleblower brought forward:

“[A] well-placed source in the UT System said the real reason Cigarroa turned on Powers was because an individual with “intimate knowledge of UT’s admissions program” met with Cigarroa after the Office of General Counsel’s report was released. This individual said the lawyers in the Office of General Counsel had been misled by Powers and his deputies when they told the lawyers that they didn’t intervene in admissions. According to this individual, they sometimes went so far as to order officials in the admissions office to accept particular students–a charge that, if true, could explain Cigarroa’s decision to ask for Powers’s resignation.”

Powers has now offered his resignation, but not effective until June 2015.At issue is a growing body of evidence that politically-connected individuals were given preferential admissions to UT despite having sub-par qualifications. Family, friends and staff of a small cadre of legislators allegedly received admissions to UT’s undergraduate and law programs after by-passing the normal entry procedures by going directly through Powers.
