With Tim Tebow’s tenure in New England having come to an end Saturday during the final round of roster cuts, the question becomes what is next for the relentlessly driven quarterback? Tebow has become a polarizing figure in sports, both in the evaluation of his play on the field and his conservative stances off. Now, it seems like Tebow might be facing the possible end to his dreams of playing professional football, unless of course he is willing to relocate to Canada.
At least that is what renowned quarterbacks coach Steve Clarkson is saying. Clarkson worked with Tebow during the off-season and is urging the quarterback to explore the option of improving his game in Canada. Other successful NFL quarterbacks have used stints in Canada to improve their game and increase their stock with NFL teams including Warren Moon, Joe Theismann, Doug Flutie, and Jeff Garcia.
The idea isn’t completely out of the realm of possibility. The Montreal Alouettes own the rights to Tebow in the CFL. The Alouettes starter is 41 year-old Anthony Calvillo, the CFL’s all-time leader in completions, passing yards, and passing touchdowns. The GM of the Alouettes, Jim Popp, has suggested that Tebow “can come here and compete to be the backup to Anthony Calvillo andlearn the game, just like Jeff Garcia did [behind Doug Flutie]. And oneday he might be the guy; that’s our vision. He can learn from the best.”
Tebow has previously been staunch in his stance of NFL or bust, but perhaps it might be time for the controversial quarterback to give Canada a second look. Maybe it’s just what he needs.
