Lamar Alexander Wins Tennessee Senate Primary

Incumbent Sen. Lamar Alexander has won his Tennessee GOP Senate primary race against Tea Party challenger Joe Carr.

The Associated Press called the race early Thursday night for Alexander with just over 20 percent of the vote in.

The final tally showed that Alexander won by 49.7 percent while Joe Carr earned 40.5 percent.

Alexander’s lead was pared down to single digits, even though a recent internal poll released by Alexander’s campaign showed that the incumbent senator had a 29 point lead.

Republican candidate George Flinn siphoned of 5.2 percent of the vote.

Carr’s campaign enjoyed a wave of interest especially after talk radio show host Laura Ingraham endorsed him – highlighting his anti-amnesty record.

Carr has spent most of his campaign pointing to Alexander’s support of the “Gang of Eight” Senate immigration bill, decrying it as amnesty and partially to blame for the border crisis currently taking place.

Former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin also endorsed Carr on her Facebook page, calling him “the new voice Tennessee needs.”
