GOP Rep Mia Love: Trump Needs ‘Positive Agenda’ to Get My Support

Tuesday on CNN’s “The Lead,” Rep. Mia Love (R-UT) said that presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump would need a “positive agenda” to win her support.

Partial transcript as follows:

TAPPER: Four years ago, you had a very prominent speaking role at the Republican National Convention. This year you have chosen to skip it, along with other members of Congress from your state. Is that an indication that Republicans are still clearly having problems uniting around Donald Trump?

LOVE: A few years ago, Mitt Romney has close connections to Utah. The House of Representatives is a branch of government that is closest to the people. And we don’t represent a national party, it is the people that have elected us to represent them. So I think that this is an opportunity for us to say, okay, these are some of the things we agree with, that we disagree with, and let’s see what we can do to come together in a room to talk about a positive agenda that will help not just our districts, but America. But not to say we’ll blindly follow one candidate. Times are tough and people are hurt so we have to follow issues not one person.

TAPPER:  if Marco Rubio was the nominee, I can’t imagine you would miss the convention.

LOVE: Marco Rubio had a positive agenda. I could look policy by policy. I could say yes, I endorse this policy, and this policy. And he came out to Utah and got the support and the hearts of the people I represent. So in representing Marco at the convention would have been representing my district. So I think that is the difference there.

TAPPER: Is there anything Donald Trump could do to get your endorsement?

LOVE: I think that one of the things he has to do is go out and be an — and understand that if he gets elected he is the leader of the free world. It’s not enough to just go out and say whatever you want to. You have to come up with positive agendas moving forward. Especially in light of what we have seen recently with all of the tragedies and the innocent blood that has been spilled. We need someone that will unify Americans. I am so sick and tired of the divisiveness. I just think it is sub par and that we as Americans we deserve a good, positive agenda and someone that will unite us. And just to be clear, I’m adamantly opposed to Hillary Clinton being president. I know what she will do. I have seen her in action, and there is no way I can support her as a president. So I will just be very clear about that.
