Whatever you might think of the genre, the R-rated, gross-out teen comedy appears to be played out. “Dirty Grandpa,” a dirty R-rated comedy boasting the dual star-power of Robert DeNiro and Zac Efron, took a dive at the box office this weekend. Critics hated it, but this genre is supposed to be critic proof. Nevertheless, in nearly 2200 theatres, what looked like a no-brainer box office concept crashed and burned with an opening of just $10 million.
This comes on the heels of the “Vacation” remake bottoming out at $59 million; Seth Rogen’s “The Night Before” belly-flopping with $43 million; “Magic Mike XXL” hitting a wall with just $66 million; “Entourage” crashing and burning at $32 million, and “American Ultra” skidding into $14 million.
“Ted 2” grossed $81 million but way-underperformed compared to the original.
“Get Hard,” “Spy” and “Trainwreck” all hovered around $100 million. Those weren’t really advertised as gross-out teen comedies.
“The Revenant” hung at number one and after three weekends in wide release sits at a healthy $118 million.
Michael Bay’s Benghazi thriller, “13 Hours” sits at a disappointing $32 million after two weekends.
