#NeverthelessShePersisted: Nguyen Emerges as Answer to Warren

Democrats removed State Senator Janet Nguyen (R-Garden Grove) from the floor of the legislature after she dared to criticize the late State Sen. Tom Hayden, a liberal icon, for his opposition to the Vietnam War.

Now, the Los Angeles Times‘ Christine Mai-Duc reports, California Republicans have embraced her as the answer to Democrats’ lionization of Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), who was silenced by the U.S. Senate for accusing Attorney General Jeff Sessions of racism,

Nguyen was born in South Vietnam and was forced to flee with her family after the U.S. abandoned its military effort there. During a session memorializing Hayden and other people who had passed away recently, Nguyen declared that he had been wrong about the war: “Today I recognize in memory of the millions of Vietnamese and hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese refugees who died in seeking for freedom and democracy.” She was removed, as Democrats fumed in outrage at her “scene.”

This weekend, at the California Republican Party convention in Sacramento, Nguyen was hailed as a heroine for her stand. Mai-Duc reports:

By Saturday morning, attendees were sporting hastily printed stickers that read “I Stand with Janet Nguyen.” The phrase was a play on the hashtag #IStandWithLiz, spawned after Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren was silenced by Republicans on the floor of the U.S. Senate.

At a luncheon headlined by Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Vista), Nguyen was introduced with a video highlighting the incident and her personal story of fleeing communist Vietnam.

Recently, Nguyen also opposed Democrats’ resolution against President Donald Trump’s executive order barring travel from terror-prone countries temporarily.
