Scheduled Protests Prompt Warning for U.S. Citizens in Egypt

The Obama administration has issued an alert for U.S. citizens concerning a “Day of Rage” planned for cities in Egypt on April 6.

This will be the first of four days of planned protests expected to take place in Cairo, Giza, Qalyubiyah, Sharqiyah, Buhayrah, Gharbiyah, Suez Canal, and Port Said.

The administration says they have no indications that these will be anti-U.S. protests. Nonetheless, they are warning U.S. citizens in Egypt to avoid places where protests and demonstrations are likely to happen.

U.S. citizens in Egypt are being told to register with the U.S. State Department or U.S. Embassy Cairo through the State Department’s “Smart Traveler Enrollment Program” in order to receive updates as the protests unfold.
