Jan. 21 (UPI) — A Maryland man said a last-minute change of his mind led to his buying a different scratch-off lottery ticket and winning a $50,000 prize.

The Caroline County man told Maryland Lottery officials he had a specific game in mind when he stopped at the Sunoco Truck Stop on Kent Island on Jan. 9.

“I have a favorite game, and I was about to buy it when I saw this one,” the Denton resident said. “It looked like a new ticket to me and for some reason I picked it instead.”

The man ended up buying a $5 20X the Cash ticket.

The player scratched off a $50,000 prize and immediately called his wife.

“I told her I’d just won $50,000 and it was all hers. As hard as I tried to convince her, she didn’t believe me,” he said.

The man said he and his wife haven decided to put the money toward a college fund for their grandchildren.
