April 1 (UPI) — Private sector hiring in the United States remained steady in March, bolstered by small businesses, the ADP National Employment Report said Wednesday.
Small businesses with less than 20 employees added 112,000 jobs in March. Mid-sized businesses with 250 to 499 employees added 6,000 jobs.
All other categories reduced payrolls with small businesses of 20 to 49 employees losing 27,000 jobs and businesses of 50 to 249 employees losing 26,000 jobs.
“Overall hiring is steady, but job growth continues to favor certain industries, including health care,” Nela Richardson, chief economist with ADP, said in a statement. “In March, this solid performance was accompanied by a boost in pay gains for job-changers.”
Education and health services led job growth by sector, adding 58,000 jobs. It is the second consecutive month that education and health services drove payroll growth.
Trade, transportation and utilities tempered the growth in the services category by cutting 58,000 jobs.
For goods, construction had the most growth, adding 30,000 payrolls. Natural resources and mining also experienced some growth with 11,000 jobs added. Manufacturing reduced payrolls by 11,000.
Wages for people switching jobs grew by 6.6%, a 0.3% increase over February. People who stayed in their current jobs experienced a 4.5% growth in wages on average.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics is set to release its March nonfarm payrolls report on Friday. The report will note the unemployment rate which was 4.4% in February.
