March 5 (UPI) — UEFA still plans to hold the Argentina-Spain soccer match this month in Doha, despite Iranian missile strikes in Qatar, officials said Thursday.
The matchup, set to feature Lionel Messi of Argentina and Lamine Yamal of Spain, among other soccer sensations, is planned for 2 p.m. EST March 27 at Lusail Stadium. The venue also hosted the 2022 World Cup final, when Messi led Argentina past France.
“At present, there are no alternative venues being considered,” UEFA said. “A final decision is anticipated toward the end of next week.”
Discussions are ongoing between UEFA and local organizers. UEFA officials said they are “aware of the speculation surrounding” the matchup, also known as the Finalissima, “given the situation in the region.”
The Qatar Football Association announced Monday that it postponed all tournament competitions and matches until further notice.
Several matches for the Asian Football Confederation Champions League and Saudi Pro League and an ATP Challenger event were among the other competitions disrupted due to the conflict.
