10 solders killed in ELN attack

CUCUTA, Colombia, May 23 (UPI) —

An attack perpetrated by Colombia’s second largest rebel group, ELN, has left 10 soldiers dead and 11 injured, officials said.

Authorities said the soldiers were killed Wednesday when an army unit clashed with the ELN in the northern area of the country.

The wounded soldiers were evacuated and taken to a hospital, where they remain under medical observation.

There were no casualties among the insurgents, Colombia Reports said, and the rebels stole 16 rifles, 25 hand grenades and other equipment from the army unit.

Colombia Reports said the area where the attack occurred has typically been a stronghold for the ELN rebels.
